What is HIA?

Health impact assessment (HIA) is a structured process that is used to assess the potential impacts of proposed projects, programs or policies. It seeks to improve decision-making by looking at the broad range of social, environmental, economic and individual factors that influence human health.

What will the training cost?

What will the training cover?

The training is practical and interactive, covering:

  • introduction to HIA
  • the steps of HIA
  • uses and applications of HIA
  • practical issues associated with doing HIAs
  • discussions with practitioners who have done HIAs

People who attend the training will gain the skills and understanding to enable them to undertake a HIA at a beginner level.

  • health promotion workers
  • development, strategic and social planners
  • private sector developers
  • local government workers
  • environmental and social impact assessors
  • environmental health workers

The Trainers

The UNSW HIA team has been involved in more than 20 HIAs and are internationally recognised as leaders in the HIA field. They have trained more than 100 people in HIA over the past 4 years as well as teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. For more information please see the NSW HIA Project page.

Studying by Distance

The course is offered via distance learning (internet based) in the second half of the year. The course runs over 12 weeks and involves 2-3 hours work a week. For more information contact Ben Harris-Roxas.

PHCM9628 Health Impact Assessment (6 units of Credit)

Health impact assessment is a structured process by which the impacts of policies, programs or projects on health can be assessed. This course covers the process of health impact assessment, it's theoretical background, history and applications. Students will have an opportunity to gain practical experience by undertaking the initial steps of health impact assessment.

The course is open to students enrolled in postgraduate programs through the school of Public Health and Community Medicine at UNSW. It takes a practical and interactive This course is suitable for students who wish to gain a basic grounding in health impact assessment, with opportunities for more detailed investigation of specific concepts.

Session 1 - offered internally via intensive workshop.

Session 2 - offered externally via WebCT

Enrolment

This course is an elective available within UNSW School of Public Health and Community Medicine’s Postgraduate Programs, comprising 6 units of credit.
