Methods of Inquiry in Health Impact Assessment

Reviewing the Existing Evidence

• The NHMRC has several guidelines on reviewing from an evidence-based medicine (EBM) perspective

  • Using Socioeconomic Evidence in Clinical Practice Guidelines (2002)
• Belfast Healthy Cities developed this guidance in response to Community Health Impact Assessments carried out in Northern Ireland in 2004. The guidelines provide a framework to enable organisations develop a community health profile within their own area.

Research Methods in HIA

• Some of the methodological challenges one may encounter when undertaking a HIA are covered in HIA: an introductory paper
• The Merseyside Guidelines have a whole section on methods for HIA that gives outlines of policy analysis, profiling, stakeholders and key informants.
• Completed HIA's - Information on methods used in HIA's can also be found in completed HIA reports.
